Although granite is a moisture-resistant material
Cutting to size
For kitchen work tops, once you have selected the color of granite required, templates need to be made. They are designed to represent the exact size and shape of your worktops to ensure an exact fit, so must include any holes for sinks, hobs and any other indentations. CNC machines are then used to cut the granite to the required pattern and polish the facing sides and edges to a high sheen. Pits and fissures occur naturally in granite so are not flaws, but rather are what makes each piece unique.
Sealing granite
Although granite is a moisture-resistant material it is also porous. For this reason, granite worktops need to be sealed with a specialist product. It is easy to determine whether your worktop needs sealing: if a drop of water forms a bead it is fine, but if the water soaks into the surface, it is time to reseal. As a guide, it generally needs to be re-sealed annually.
